I am a registered nurse with a graduate degree in nursing education and I am passionate about telling others what it is like for a person to live with a mental illness, especially depression. I am a survivor of a chronic relapsing depression and have lived with it for over thirty years. During the course of my treatment, I experienced many hospitalizations, underwent two neurological surgeries, over four hundred electro-convulsive treatments, and was treated with almost every medication available. I have gotten to the point where I feel I am in recovery- even though I am still susceptible to relapses. Knowing what I know now, I can recover much faster. I am passionate about helping others improve their mental health. I also believe that many of the things I have learned can help anybody improve their mental health, whether or not they live with a mental illness.
I have been an active member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and have shared my story with community groups and at the collegiate level. Around 2002-2003 I was encouraged to write a book about my story. It took me a long time to actually do it because I was in the midst of the worst of my illness. After I had been feeling better I actually set pen to paper. I wrote and published a book which I quickly updated, retitled and republished the following year. This is the title, Climbing the Mount Everest of Depression-a Story of Hope, Recovery and Inspiration. You can purchase it in the upper right hand panel on this page by clicking on the picture or you can go to Amazon.com.
